Spotlight: David Montgomery
Tell us about yourself.
My name is David Montgomery and I work as the Technical Director at Calvary Baptist Church in Lake Havasu City, AZ where I live with my wife and three children. I grew up in the Florida Panhandle where I began serving by running tech in our Children's Ministry. I then moved to our Youth Ministry leading worship and running tech as well. It was there that I responded to God's call on my life to ministry. Since then I've been in the church helping craft the worship experiences.
"At the time I was unhappy with our media providers. I wanted something that was a bit more... real. I love the shots of nature, the creativity to add beyond that. I feel that it helps us connect with our Creator through His creation. The quality is unparalleled and the variety is extremely useful."
Tell us about your church.
Calvary Baptist Church serves over 2000 people each weekend in our four services and many more in our community. We exist to lead people to a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ through the love of His people and the power of His truth.
What is your role/position at your church?
My job title is Technical Director, which means my primary responsibilities are to oversee and upkeep our AVL systems as well as to schedule, train and equip our volunteers. I program our Media and Lights each week. I also work as a Communications Manager doing Graphics, Photo/Video as well as Social Media. Basically I make sure tech happens on the weekend through maintenance, programming, training and scheduling
What do you love most about your role?
I love that I get to help craft an experience for those who may not know Christ and give them the opportunity to meet Him possibly for the very first time. I love helping our volunteers flex their creative muscles and equipping them to lead as well. I am allowed a lot of freedom to express creativity and I am very thankful that our leadership has entrusted me with that.
How did you end up in the role you have now?
I am mostly self taught but did take college classes for Music Production Technology. They really helped me learn the tools I needed to get to the next level. I moved from another job all the way across the country. I grew up in the south, so the west is a bit of culture shock. Getting out of the bible belt was new for me, but it is refreshing to see a culture that doesn't have all the societal pressures to conform and see people just be real. We serve a real God who solves real problems and heals real hurts and the people we serve find the realness so refreshing!
Ok...How did you hear about VMC?
I believe I found VMC on a Facebook Group. At the time I was unhappy with our media providers. I wanted something that was a bit more... real. I love the shots of nature, the creativity to add beyond that. I feel that it helps us connect with our Creator through His creation. The quality is unparalleled and the variety is extremely useful.
How often do you use VMC, and what do you love about what we do?
We use VMC every week, exclusively. After we subscribed, we let our other subscriptions end. When we do not use a VMC background, we opt for a blank background. I love the new countdowns and every new pack is something that I did't even know I wanted yet.
Closing Thoughts? Something we missed?
If you've spent any time in church, you know that each church has its own culture and their own way to do what they do. I feel that VMC can help any church whether you have 50 or 5000 people. As the next generations begin to come to our churches, I believe that media will play an important role in communicating the Gospel. All the more reason to invest in excellent media.
